Role of the Data Translator

This effort sought to establish the ideal future state of self-service cloud analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence healthcare platform.A client asked us to create a strategic vision to help democratize their data.


Our Challenge


1-To understand the current client experience with data insights, their existing employee skill sets, and the relationship between their team members related to unlocking insights from their data.

2-To identify opportunity areas and propose a future state experience of their data translator journey with an actionable self-service data and analytic platform.

Members of the multidisciplinary UX team must become data translators if they are to succeed in making data and analytics insight easy to use. As a UX leader, you must understand how to connect different skillsets on your team with the end-user of the product and the data scientists that create the insights.

My role in this engagement was to lead design research and to provide hands-on UX strategy and design for the future state story and hero concepts. The other members included:

Background & Role: To understand the role of the stakeholder and their team in the organization.

 

The Future Role of Data Translators: To understand the relationship between the client’s strategy and its data translator needs.


Unpacking The Current Experience: To understand how the stakeholder and their team shape the current data translator experience, directly and indirectly, the constraints they work within, as well as their perspective on consultant pain points and desires. 


Shaping the Future Data Translator Experience: To explore hypotheses and visions for the future consultant experience and the stakeholder team’s role in realizing that vision. 

The output of this effort was an archetype ecosystem to demonstrate the current employee experience with data translation.

Discovery Workshop

Focus: Identify key actors and assess opportunities to enhance the future experience from the data translators' point of view.


Purpose: Enable the experience design team to assess and recommend improvements to the data translator experience leveraging existing IBM capabilities where feasible.


Significance: Guide the client to strengthen and differentiate the data translator experience to build relevance for this new data translator role.


Pre-Workshop: Interview analysis, secondary research review, and a rough data translation journey derived from the interview process.

The following archetypes were uncovered during research and describe the key actors who support data translation. It is essential to consider these supporting actors to identify the gaps in their support experience today and the vision for the ideal future consultant experience.

Current State Journey Map

The current state journey map is the representation of the consultant's journey from their point of view. It is a tool for understanding the state of affairs by identifying interactions between journey actors, places, artifacts, and perceived pain points and moments of delight.
